At a time where the current state of the world hinges on the color of one's skin or the name of one's god, Habitat OC believes it important to unite people of all faiths in celebration of diversity.
Sunday, September 8th, 2019 saw the success of the much-anticipated, first-ever Build for Unity Celebration. Held at St. George's Episcopal Church in Laguna Hills, the celebration highlighted unity and diversity through its multicultural cuisine and entertainment.
The event, which sold out early, encouraged involvement and participation from the Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim and Catholic communities in Orange County.
Donations from generous food sponsors kept more than 200 guests satisfied. Traditional dances from the Korean and Israeli cultures provided guests with a glimpse into entertainment from around the world.
Our entertainment included the Traditional Korean Dance Institute, Chapman University's Men of Harmony a capella group, Israeli dancing, and storytelling from Victoria Burnett. ArtzAppeal Henna artist Vaishali Bellad was a huge hit, as she gave guests intricate henna tattoos.
To close off the evening, we had yogi Courtney Parkyn give a relaxation exercise to help our guests wind down after an afternoon of festivities. We also called one of our program families up to the stage to share their compelling and inspirational story.
Altogether, the event generated approximately $15,000 to continue building homes for families in need. Just as we are always proud to declare our ability to build community, homes and hope, our Build for Unity Celebration was a testimony to how we can bring people of different faiths and backgrounds together and build community.
